Since today is National Women's Health & Fitness Day, I thought I'd bring up a weighty issue (ha ha).
For those of you who are overweight, do you ever feel like you aren't the person you see in photos? A mirror is one thing, we know our best sides, don't we? And most of us only look at ourselves using one mirror (not the kind that they use on the show What Not to Wear on TLC). But when you see a snapshot of yourself and say, ugh!! I don't really look like that, do I???
We can say it's a bad camera angle, or bad lighting, or that a camera adds 5 pounds, but do you ever think that when you look at the other people in the photo with you? They look like they always do. Isn't it funny how our minds can play those kinds of games with us?
I have always been a pudgy and curvy girl. I will never forget the time a man I thought I loved at the time was giving me some affection, then said, "You know you'd be beautiful if you would lose some weight!" Talk about a mood-killer!! I am not with him anymore, of course...
After I had my son, I weighed a little over 200 lbs. The most I'd ever weighed. I felt so good about my body when I was pregnant, kind of sexy, kind of relieved that the 30 pounds I gained was appropriate (and it was). Fast forward three years and I was still hovering around 197. I never had enough time to go exercise, too busy with work and child and husband and home. I guess you could say I was playing the martyr, and had no one to blame but myself. I was so sick of it.
Anyway, I started working out - renting DVDs through Netflix and trying out exercise videos. I stuck with a few and tried some detoxing diets (Maker's Diet) and tried to change the way I eat. To date I have lost about 35 lbs. But I have totally slacked off my exercise for about 6 months.
I have joined our YMCA and am trying out some classes and swimming a lot with my son. It's so much fun to have a place to go like the Y. I would still like to lose weight and give me a reason to toss all my old clothes to the side. Most of them fit still, although very loosely and I look perpetually sloppy!! So, I am on another mission, to exercise more and have fun while doing it...as well as try to teach my son how important it is to be active. Especially with all the sit-down jobs that are out there now. (Mine included!!)
I like who I am inside, now it is time for me to help my outside match my perception of who I am. Is anyone else with me in the struggle to become healthy and lose weight? Are you co-workers in the same boat as you? Try to encourage each other to start exercising together, whether it's walking during lunch, meeting before or after work, or maybe even having a little friendly weight loss competition.
I have been on another forum where we had a weight loss challenge according to regions (it was a local mommy board). I wonder if we could do the same thing here?

I started changing the way I eat about 6 months ago and have lost 30 lbs. Now I want to add exercise as well so that I will feel better and have more energy.
I started eating the Ezekiel 4.9 bread and cereal (that you recommended to me) and love them both. I really try to focus on my carb and my fat intake.
I keep telling myself that I am going to go home and walk after work, however by the time I get home I just want to sit and watch television. My kids are no longer at home and my husband is always away (football, hunting, fishing, baseball, basketball....) so I guess I need to find something that I can do by myself and for myself.
I would love to be involved in some sort of challenge. Count me in.

| Well, I started something a while back. I was successful in part lost about 20 pounds. Ofcourse life happens and it got away from me. I have a HUGE trip planned at the end of the year so I have to get back on track. I am currently in a kickboxing class (local rec center). I love it. Unfortunately that hasn't made me lose the weight but I am toning up some. THANK GOD!!! I hope to lose 20 pounds before I have to leave that gives me 2 1/2 months to do it. I am starting a pretty strict diet on the 1st. Low carb and high protein lots of veggies. I know I can do it, I just have to apply myself!!! So good luck to you guys and we will just have to maybe post some encouraging devotionals or something. I will see if I can find a good one and do a new posts for daily devotionals. That would be cool.

Jdtoney - i think that is a wonderful idea. it always helps to have that reminder everyday that "i am on a diet". I have always found it easier if there is some sort of a challenge involved such as what you are wanting to do. Get it started!!

I could stand to do this again. It's so easy to get lazy with food and eat more carbs cause it's easy and available instead of eating veggies and protein-packed food. Thankfully it's getting colder and I will be making a lot of soups and stews again.
Anyway, the book I got to read more about the detox (it was one stage of three I think) was The Maker's Diet.
A good tonic that you can drink daily is a mixture of apple cider vinegar, water, and honey. It is very good for your body to help balance out your pH too.
I also used to drink aloe vera juice (I got it at Sam's Club). It has the same effect. Kinda sour, but after you get used to it, it's very refreshing.

Maybe natural sugars, but nothing added. It's just 100% aloe vera juice. Not sure of what the carb or sugar value is. I 'm currently out of it, so I can't look at a bottle.

I am thinking of doing this to cleanse my body. Did you feel a differnce after or during the 10 day period you tried it? Were you starving or have terrible cravings?

I will add that it's energizing and good for my skin too.
- Aloe Vera has shown for maintaining and promoting the right balance of stomach acids.
- In fact, aloe Vera’s tissue regeneration activities again build tissue of the small and large intestine, colon and stomach tissue.
- Improves the property of immune cells, and it is very effective to eliminate waste and build up toxic and other properties.
- Aloe Vera enhances absorption of nutrients and digestive functioning.
- Aloe Vera Juice is useful to treat digestive system conditions like acid indigestion, candida, colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

Well, the first few days are difficult, then the next few days are hard as well. It's a good exercise for your will power. But if you really stick with it (the fruit & veggie diet), it's great.
I did notice a difference. You are ridding your body of, not only toxins that we build up of chemicals, etc., but of our dependence on so much sugar in our diets and breads as well.
If you are considering the 10 day fast, I suggest checking out that book to read some more information on the whys of it all and what comes next. It really helps your motivation when you read about how the Standard American Diet (SAD) really affects our bodies negatively.
That being said, I have not kept up with the change in my eating. But I think my husband and I will start fresh. The Maker's Diet then adds foods you are allowed to eat, but also talks about what isn't so good for your body (based on what God allowed the Hebrews to eat - so it is from the Bible). There are health reasons stated in the book and it's all very interesting.

I will be consulting with a Health professional through Trinity Wellness Center first. They are going to be motivating me and telling me the does and don'ts.
After hearing what you have just said and the things that they have told me - I feel like my body is in dire need of a good cleansing!
I just never thought of it like that. Its crazy how the air we breathe and bad things we eat and drink can cause so much interior damage that we never even know exist!

I will work on putting a little friendly competition together for our forum members. Should be fun and good for us too!! Look for something in your Message Center sometime this week as I work on the details.
